Our Church Roots

Our local church is rooted in the Evangelical Covenant Denomination .

The E.C.C. is a rapidly growing, multi-ethnic denomination with churches and ministries all around the world.  Founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrants  , the E.C.C. values :

  1. The Bible as the word of God.

  2. The gift of God's grace through faith in Jesus.

  3. Extending God's love and compassion to a hurting world.

  4. The strength that comes from unity within diversity.

Our Church Started in 1882 When...

The "Swedish Free Missionary Church of Iron Mountain" was created to meet the needs of the many Swedish immigrants that had found themselves in the area due to the booming mining industry in Iron Mountain.  In 1940 the congregation, led by Rev. Paul E. Johnson, decided to rename the Church, "First Covenant Church" in an attempt to reach those in the community that were not of Scandinavian descent.  We have moved buildings since then (thanks to a fire) and have had several pastors come and go, but Jesus has been faithful through it all.

Our Vision statement is still:

"bring glory and honor to God in all we do".

As is our Mission to be a GROWing church.

                    G -  God-centered discipleship

                    R -   Relationship building

O -  Outward action in service

                    W -  Worship on purpose.

Much has changed yet much remains.

As part of the E.C.C. we are a church that is:

  • Looking to bring the hope of Jesus to a world in need of hope.

  • Bible focused and guided.

  • Traditional in a way that is not rigid.

  • Flexible to our local community and a partner to a great church family.

Most importantly we are rooted in the understanding that all of us have fallen short and are in need of a savior.  Jesus is that savior.  It is Jesus, and only Jesus, that we place our hope, trust and confidence in.

What We Believe

When a new member of our congregation join the church, they are asked these questions about what they believe and intend to live out:

1) Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior and promise to follow Him?

2) Do you accept the Bible as the word of God and the only perfect rule

    for faith, doctrine, and conduct?

3) Do you intend to live as faithful followers of Christ in this church family?

These questions essentially sum up the core beliefs that guide our church family.

But On Another Level, There Is More To The Answer...

We know that when it comes to the question, "What Do You Believe", there are many thoughts and opinions available.  As a church we choose to live by the old quote...

WhatAreTheEssentials.jpg

The "Essentials":

  • We believe the Bible is the inspired and authoritative written Word of God

  • We believe that God created the world from nothing and governs all things.

  • We believe there is one God, in three persons:  Father, Son, and  Holy Spirit.

  • We believe all of us have sinned and fallen short.

  • We believe in Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal future return to this earth.

  • We believe the only way of being cleansed from sin is through repentance and faith in the Christ and are found righteous because of Him only.

  • We believe in water baptism as a proclamation of faith and obedience.

  • We believe in the power of the Holy Spirit that lives within all believers and allows us to grow and live a holy life.

  • We believe that the Church is the body of Christ sent into the world to bring glory to God.
